Early Memories

some early memories are gardens of delight

others are not so serene like getting into a fight

making Revelle car models like Ed Roth’s SuperFink

was a favorite hobby because I didn’t have to think

I raced on narrow red skateboards with metal wheels

while dreaming of someday having my own automobiles

my imagination was unfettered with too many facts

spending my time playing with all kinds of knick-knacks

countless hours were spent imitating TV heroes

in plots with pals featuring dramatic death throes

my memories of those early days

of childish beliefs and pretend plays

are still companions in my old age

and are still a pleasure to engage

Call of the Coded Words

they’re a siren’s call to mystery and intrigue

laced with meanings from a special colleague

coded words that creep into conversations

secrets exchanged between rival nations

words so fraught with hidden meaning

can also contain something demeaning

peeling away layers of deep mistrust

that if decoded could easily combust

turning a questionably civilized society

into a maelstrom of vicious impropriety

Riffing on Living

205 words – free verse

life in the fast lane of concrete jungles weaving through cities and states seeking altered states and the key to paradise while cities burn from fires caused by climate change and a whole range of environmental disasters brought on by corporate behemoths that breath life into Wall Street’s secrets corridors of power looking down on the average citizen nearly powerless trying to fight Goliath with a cell phone tapped by the FBI and marketers vying for the masses money in cyberspace a dangerous place where saints and sinners trumpet their wares to the unwary visitors responding to special sales for limited times – but wait there’s more – in the pursuit of happiness religions and cults seek converts with promises of saving souls and access to elite Hollywood parties where the wealthy meet to greet one another and brag about big contracts and casting beds while women fight for equality and freedom from perverted movie execs soaked in their huge egos looking for the next star in an industry of dreams where viewers suspend reality to escape a world of lies that have formed like cobwebs in our society holding the average person victim with fake news and rhetoric straight from hell and premiering near you soon.

TV and Reality

we have to be careful not to believe everything we see

on TV

the line between reality shows and reality

has become murky

a parade of partisan petty bourgeoisie

on TV

from entertainment to ideology

a warped view of what the world should be

based upon viewer popularity

on TV

where talk shows hosts spew witty repartee

and political pundits dramatically can’t agree

instantly becoming must-watch insanity

on TV

where we can be fooled by technology

into seeing something entirely phony

gleefully watching a bunch of baloney

I think that I’ll never see

anything more deceptive

than a TV

Tech-Challenged Retiree’s Poetic Reverie

keeping up with 21st century technology

isn’t easy for a retiree like me

I’m in awe of the computer community

and their popularity

but I’m doomed to be a forever trainee

and not a true devotee

I say this unapologetically

it’s who I happen to be

technology does makes me happy

to a certain degree

making life less of a mystery

as the internet sets me free

with a world class library

Keep The Line Moving

there’s no time to stop or hesitate

or to contemplate your fate

the line must keep moving along

no sense of right or wrong

the line keeps moving everyday

never making any headway

in a society of strangers

afraid of dangers

lines are crossed and people die

not even knowing why

everyone keeps moving the line

looking for a sign

a guiding light

through the dark night

for inspiration

and salvation

Stop. Listen. Talk.

the people who spend their time really communicating

are taking an important path towards eliminating hating

learning to have a successful conversation

is the way to reinvigorate a polarized nation

it’s important young and old listen to one another

instead of stepping on words disrespecting the other

for civility to return to our divided society

we need to call out destructive impropriety

It needs to stop

Everyone needs to listen

Then we can talk
